What is a Retreat Center?
A retreat center is a hospitable environment which welcomes people who want to step back from the busy pace of daily life and take time to reflect on what is taking place in their lives and environment. It is usually a place where reflective programs are offered, where new and creative thinking is supported and where the spiritual quest is valued. Wisdom House grew into a retreat center during its first 30 years. The center began as a monastic-style home for women joining the Daughters of Wisdom. It continued to expand into Seat of Wisdom College for the sisters. Even during these times, persons were welcomed for retreats and reflection. In 1967, the center formally transitioned into an interfaith retreat and conference center. The center now presents various retreat and interfaith programs in spirituality, education and the arts. As a conference center, Wisdom House welcomes those groups whose purpose is consonant with the mission of Wisdom House.

What is a Retreat?
A retreat is a time to gain a new perspective on one's life, career, organization, and the like. It usually takes place in a center devoid of in-room phones and televisions. Cell phone and anything that would disturb the general atmosphere of quiet are not recommended. There are various types of retreats but all are designed to have a positive effect on the individual or organization that enters into a retreat.

What is a Directed Retreat?
A Directed retreat is an opportunity to meet individually with a spiritual director, a guide who listens and walks with another on their spiritual journey.

What is a Guided Retreat?
A Guided retreat is a retreat based on a particular theme. The guide for this retreat presents a conference each day and this becomes the basis for the day's reflection and prayer.

What is a Silent Retreat?
A silent retreat takes place when the entire retreat center is in silence. This spirit of quiet is encouraged so that participants on retreat may be freefrom social pressures of light conversation and may experience the opportunity to focus on their inner spiritual journey. Other than times of meeting with the retreat leader and during worship, retreatants commit themselves to a spirit of quiet. For those who may be new to this experience, we may be able to provide a dining room for speaking.

What is Spirituality?
Spirituality is the way a person's spirit (deep values, beliefs, relation with God) influences the way the person acts, behaves and make decisions in the world.

What types of people come to Wisdom House?
Each year thousands of people from around the world, from different walks of life and spiritual directions come to Wisdom House. The common thread among them is the desire to grow spiritually, ethically, educationally and to seek Divine Wisdom.

How many programs do you hold each year?
Wisdom House offers a broad spectrum of programs focused on education, spirituality and the arts. Programs lengths vary from a few hours to a full week. In 2002, over 500 programs were held at Wisdom House.

Are you a Catholic organization?
Wisdom House is a Catholic organization serving as an interfaith retreat and conference center. Are there nature centers?
Wisdom House is located on 54 acres of forests and meadows with peaceful country roads. Some trails are marked. The outdoor turf labyrinth is available to reflective walking. An outdoor swimming pool is open in July and August. Topsmead state park, with walking trails, is one mile from Wisdom House.
