Zoom Series: Art Criticism for Working Artists

A virtual class (via Zoom) dedicated to all visual artists seeking to show their work, receive critique from the instructor and peers, and discuss their ideas within the context of art history and current culture. This program is open to artists in all fields, including (but not limited to) visual arts as well as music, film, dance, performance, and writing.

Purpose

  • To strength and intensify individual artwork

  • To clarify the process of presenting artwork to galleries

  • To help artists who have never shown their work professionally to produce art work that is showable

  • Be inspired by the work of critique peers

Guiding questions

  • What inspires you and why? Equally important: what repulses you?

  • Where does an artwork stand within the context of art history and current art?

  • How can the artist cross reference to other artworks and how can this reference inform the artist?

  • What skills can artists develop for presenting their work and self curating?

Timeline

  • Each session will be 90 minutes

  • Meet bimonthly (2x a month) via Zoom

  • The entire class will be 3 months (approximately January to March) with 6 sessions total

Tentative syllabus

Session 1 : Introductions, personal inspirations and aversions, expectations of critiques and assignments.

Sessions 2 - Session 4: one to two people will present their works (sketches, works in progress, and/or finished pieces) and instructor and peers will offer critiques.

Session 5 - Session 6 : review of presented work and discussion of relevant art history.

Fernando Martinez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and studied bio-engineering at Polytechnic Institute of Technology and furniture design and fine arts at S.U.N.Y., Purchase, NY. His work has been shown in solo shows at the P-Cafe in New Rochelle, NY, the Solar Gallery in East Hampton, NY and the Bison Legacy Gallery in Cody, Wyoming. Group shows include the Miranda Fine Arts Gallery and Art-Miami Solar Gallery in East Hampton, NY, as well as the Mobile Show Galleria in Boston, among other East Coast venues.
